Radon is a carcinogenic gas that is hazardous to inhale and radon testing is recommended for all residential and multi-family structures. The US EPA estimates that nearly 1 out of every 15 homes in the US has unsafe indoor radon levels. Approximately 21,000 lung cancer deaths are attributed to radon exposure every year, with approximately 2,900 of these deaths occurring among people who have never smoked. If you smoke and your home has high radon levels, your risk of lung cancer increases greatly.
The Environmental Protection Agency, EPA, recommends you install a system to reduce radon gas in your home if the level of gas is 4 picocuries of radon per liter (pCi/L) or higher.
